Over the months of Spring and Summer the children of Ysgol Crud y Werin, Ysgol Nefyn and Ysgol Llanbedrog came together to compose new poems that respond to their local landscapes. From Porthdinllaen to the village of Aberdaron to Llanbedrog beach - it was a week to remember with the National Trust searching for natural treasures and studying the stories and histories attached to the twists and turns of the local paths.
Casi Wyn, Children’s Poet Laureate for Wales, went on a journey with the pupils before setting out to create original poems. Under the guidance of artist Zoe Lewthwaite, the seeds of the poetry have evolved visually to create an artful exhibition. Zoe hosted a creative workshop with each school teaching the children the process of ‘cyanotype’ printing; using natural materials collected on the trip, the dye exposes solely through the power of sunlight, turning the dye into an indigo blue colour, leaving the natural shapes of the foliage imprinted on the fabric and paper.
The exhibition showcases the creativity and originality of each child’s individual piece of work. All wording and illustrations have been hand drawn by the children leading to their final textile piece which has then been worked on with hand embroidery to highlight the special shapes and symbols.
A bridge between a child and his area, a link between the importance of the local and the rest of the world. This is a celebration of the heritage and natural wealth of Pen Llŷn and the unique voices of the children of the area.
