Join us for a hands-on workshop sculpting bowls from earth with local artist Gabriella Rhodes. In this session, you'll learn the techniques for making and finishing a one-of-a-kind bowl using natural materials like locally-foraged clay, sand, and straw. Things you'll learn include:
- Preparing the raw materials
- Simple pinching and carving techniques
- Using natural pigments to add colour to your work
- Finishing your bowl (without the need for firing it in a kiln)
These bowls can be kept as a memento of the workshop, a reminder of our connection to the environment, or used to store keepsakes. No prior experience is necessary and all materials will be provided. Limited spots are available, booking early is recommended.
Gabriella Rhodes (b. Stoke-on-Trent) is an artist working with clay as her primary material on the Llŷn Peninsula. She uses hand-building and carving techniques to make things that sit somewhere between sculpture and craft. The forms, made of earth themselves, reference the geology and landscapes around her. She graduated from Manchester School of Art in 2018 with a BA in Three Dimensional Design and has since focused her practice on celebrating material provenance and deepening her understanding of the natural environment.
